How to start an irrigation system from scratch?

Our experience shows that farms often need not only irrigation equipment, but also assistance in the complex solution of their tasks. Therefore, we are engaged in the implementation of irrigation systems on a turnkey basis. Our specialists will develop a project, build a water main and a pumping station, assemble an irrigation system, put it into operation and then provide service when necessary.

First meeting

If the farm has already "matured" an interest for irrigation, then it is best to get acquainted and communicate. An irrigation project often has many nuances, depending on the characteristics of the field of a particular farm, crops grown, access to water, and much more. Therefore, in the preliminary communication, we can give many pieces of advice and help the client to choose the right direction to start. After all, our expertise is broader than just the manufacture of equipment.

There are several options. Firstly, we constantly participate in and organize ourselves the "Field Days" where we demonstrate our machines and equipment. Secondly, a farmer can visit our service center, where we will conduct an excursion and tell him about all the nuances of implementation of irrigation.

One of the decisive factors for the possibility of starting irrigation systems is the access to a water source with its sufficient quantity for irrigation. Farms located near large rivers or irrigation channels are lucky in this regard. For those who do not have this advantage, we can also offer a solution. Often, farmers are ready to drill wells, build storage tanks or lay a pipeline for 5 km or more. Although this increases the cost of irrigation per hectare, many of them do so, since this is a guarantee of the harvest, which means that the investment will pay off.

On average, the payback period for an irrigation system is up to 3 years. But we have experience when a customer's irrigation system was paid off in just 1 season during droughts.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT

 

After the first communication, when a farm has already made a decision that it plans to install an irrigation system in the next 1-2 seasons, the project department gets involved in the work.

It usually takes from 2 to 10 days to prepare an accurate project estimate. At the initial stage, 3-7 people are involved in the development of the project.

There are cases when you have to work on non-standard projects. For example, restoration of a storage tank by covering it with a special waterproof film or modernization of old pumping stations by repairing obsolete collectors or pipelines.

Types of irrigation systems

The basic design of our irrigation systems is similar to American product, but we applied our own design developments.

Therefore, we have launched our own certified laboratory for assessing the quality of metal. For example, each pipe in the system is pressure tested. Not all manufacturers can boast of such quality control at all stages.

Today, depending on the needs of customers and the characteristics of the field, we offer the following types of irrigation systems to the client:

  • pivot stationary systems,
  • linear systems,
  •  hippodrome systems with a turning function.

 

This year we launched the first two-winged irrigation system. The customer was satisfied with the result. Its distinctive feature is the presence of an autonomous pumping station with water intake from the channel and control via a cable.

Most of the machine components consist of imported accessories that have proven themselves excellent in difficult field conditions. For example, we use UMC gearboxes and geared motor, electrical components by Schneider Electric (France), sprayers and end guns by Nelson (USA), Komet (Austria).

Selecting a machine

The type of irrigation system depends on the field configuration. Thus, in the Kherson region, we most often install pivot type machines. In the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporozhye regions where mixed fields prevail we choose square and rectangular types. If the field has a square shape, then we recommend pivot type of machine. Linear machines are most often used on rectangular fields, since they can cover 100% of it. But we also can use pivot machines if we see that they will be effective. If the field has irregular shape, then we can use hippodrome or linear machines.

IT technologies in irrigation

The company has its own remote control system. It is used for circular systems. The customer can order and purchase it optionally when installing the irrigation system. This program allows the head of the farm, agronomist or operator to monitor the operation of the sprinkler system from his smartphone or computer: remotely start and stop, change the direction of movement, reverse, set the flow rate, see the operating status of the machine. The program also sees errors and signals about them.

How does the system work? After the installation and start-up of the irrigation system, the data of its modem is registered in a special remote access program. The GPS coordinates of the field, the length of the system, the sector of its operation, as well as options such as an end gun or an electric valve are also enlisted there. Then the signal of the mobile operator is activated, the coverage of which is the best at this location. And everything is ready to work.

Installation and commissioning

Averagely it takes three weeks to manufacture 1-5 machines from the moment of prepayment. Of course, large volumes of orders are processed longer - up to a month. In general, the production time depends on the scale of the order and delivery time (it can be a one-time or stage-by-stage delivery), as well as on the load of production facilities. The hot season is December-March. But thanks to efficient planning, we have the most optimal delivery and installation terms.

It takes 3-4 days to install, set up and start up one irrigation machine with a length of, for example, 400 m. But this time is relevant only in case of the proper weather conditions and the necessary human and technical resources, including the availability of ready-made communications - a pipeline and electrical facilities.

Having our own service department, we provide services both for installation supervision and complex complete installation. Installation supervision includes:

  • arrival at the farm of two Variant Irrigation specialists - for the installation and for the electrical part of work. Control of workers provided by the customer;
  • complete commissioning of the machine;
  • training of the customer's personnel.

 

If we agree with the customer about a complex complete installation, then he does not need to look for equipment and people. For this, we have ready 5 service and assembly teams plus lifting equipment.

It is important to note that before putting the equipment into operation, training of operators is required. The training usually takes 1-2 days. At the end, testing is carried out to determine how much the operator has consolidated his knowledge and can operate the machine.
